The cost of being the capable one
Competence is rewarded until it becomes the reason nobody asks how she is.
It begins as a compliment. She is the one who handles things. The one who does not fall apart, who remembers the details, who can be relied on when something goes wrong. For years this is simply true and it is largely pleasant to be described that way.
Then it stops being a description and becomes a position. Not something she is, but something she occupies, with duties attached that nobody wrote down and she never agreed to.
How a quality becomes an arrangement
The mechanism is ordinary. Each time she absorbs something that was not hers to absorb, the people around her recalibrate. Not maliciously. They simply learn where the floor is, and the floor is wherever she stops catching things.
Over enough repetitions the arrangement hardens. Her capacity is no longer a resource she offers, it is the baseline everyone else has built on, and any reduction in it reads to them as a change in her rather than a correction.
Why it is so difficult to put down
Because the alternative is not rest. The alternative is watching things fail that she is entirely able to prevent, in front of people who will be affected, while knowing she could have stopped it.
That is not a small ask, and it is why the usual advice to set boundaries lands so poorly. The boundary is not the hard part. The hard part is tolerating what happens on the other side of it, and no one is honest with women about that.
Nobody asks the capable one how she is, because the question has an obvious answer and everyone is relying on it.
What it costs over a decade
The costs are not dramatic and they compound. A woman in this position is consulted about problems and rarely about her own life. Her preferences go unasked because they are assumed to be flexible. Her difficulties are discounted because she has always managed before.
Eventually she notices she has no idea what she would want if nobody needed anything from her, and that the question is genuinely hard to answer. That is the real bill, and it arrives long after the charges were incurred.
Changing the terms
Not by collapsing, which is how this usually ends, and which restores the arrangement as soon as she recovers. By deciding in advance and in writing what she will carry and what she will not, before the next occasion arises rather than during it.
Decided in advance, it is a position. Decided in the moment, it is a mood, and everyone around her has years of evidence that her moods pass and the arrangement resumes.
- Transitions
When you have outgrown your life
There is a specific difficulty in wanting to change a life that nothing is wrong with. There is nothing to point at, and no vocabulary that does not sound ungrateful.
- Decisions
Why you keep making the same decision
Most women arrive at a decision already knowing the answer, and stay exactly where they are for another year. That is not indecision. It is a negotiation.
