Money and Autonomy

The soft life, and what it actually costs

Being taken care of and being secure are not the same arrangement.

The soft life is usually described as rest. Less striving, less proving, less performing capability for people who were never going to be impressed. Understood that way it is not only reasonable, it is overdue for a great many women.

What is rarely described is the arrangement underneath it, and the arrangement is where the cost sits.

Rest and dependence are different things

Rest is a state. Dependence is a position. A woman can be exhausted and independent, or comfortable and entirely without standing. The language of the soft life tends to blur the two, because both can look identical from the outside on a good afternoon.

The distinction becomes legible the moment there is a disagreement. Not a serious one. An ordinary one. In an arrangement of rest, a disagreement is a disagreement. In an arrangement of dependence, a disagreement carries a second question underneath it that only one person has to consider.

The cost is rarely charged at the start

Nobody enters this with the terms written out. It accumulates. A career paused, then dated. A professional network that thins because there is nothing to keep it warm. Skills that were current four years ago. An address, a school, a circle, and a standard of living all attached to an income that is not hers.

None of these are mistakes on their own. Together they compose a position, and the position is the thing worth looking at directly, because it determines what she can do on the day she wants to do something he has not agreed to.

The question is not whether she is happy in it. The question is what she would have to accept in order to leave it, and whether she has ever let herself calculate that figure.

The questions worth asking early

How long could she support herself at her current standard, alone, starting on Monday. What would she earn today, not four years ago. Whose name is on what. What would the first six months cost, in money and in the opinion of people whose opinion she has been managing.

These are not questions about leaving. Most women who answer them honestly stay. They are questions about knowing the terms of an arrangement she is already inside, which is a different thing from suspecting them and declining to look.

Choosing it deliberately

There is nothing wrong with an arrangement in which one person earns and another does not. There is a great deal wrong with being inside one by drift, having never priced it, and discovering the terms during the argument in which they finally matter.

A soft life chosen with the figures in front of her is a decision. A soft life arrived at without ever running them is an exposure. The comfort is identical. The standing is not.
